Minor Mugshot Update
April 11th, 2007 by dlove
I’ve done a minor update to the 1.1.40 mugshot packages in that I’ve re-synced with Heikki Henriksen’s debian packages. The only changes have to do with minor alterations in order to abide by the Mugshot trademark guidelines. Edgy i386 and amd64 are up, as well as source for dapper / edgy / feisty.
New Cell Phones
April 11th, 2007 by dlove
Kimberly and I have both recently gotten new cell phones. The Motorola RAZR V3. It’s available in any color you want as long as that color is black… I mean gun metal.
Overall, we’re pretty happy with the phones so far (though the UI sucks - I could rant for hours about everything that’s wrong with mobile phone UIs, but I’ll spare you that for now).
In the process, Kimberly ended up switching to Cingular / AT&T / Ma’ Bell or whatever you want to call them. This followed, let us call it, a “confrontation” between Kimberly and her old cell phone (guess who won).
The best part is after the initial fees, her bill is actually going to be lower. Rock on. As a bonus, we’re both “iPhone ready” if / when we decide to upgrade to one of those.
If you happen to be around the Kenosha area (hey - it’s not that far of a drive from Chicago), our wonderful service provider is Superior Wireless.
Disclosure:
My brother happens to work there, but I’ll guarantee you that you will get good service regardless of who you are. The best part is that all of the employees are very down to earth people who aren’t going to try to bullshit you into spending money you don’t need to. They also won’t try to sell your grandfather the latest blackberry (unless he actually wants it, of course). And if you’re going to get screwed by a phone company, I’ve found Cingular to be the least painful.
More Builds
April 3rd, 2007 by dlove
Thanks to Keywan and Michael, feisty builds are filled out. We have amd64, i386, and powerpc feisty builds available. I keep hoping that feisty will be released on my birthday (April 17th).
Mugshot 1.1.40
April 3rd, 2007 by dlove
1.1.40 is now in the repository for amd64 and i386 edgy. As always, additional builds are welcome. Notable changes include:
Added libgnomevfs2-dev and libgnome-desktop-dev as build dependencies.
There’s a Quit option (finally)! Yay!
Now if only mugshot would respect my DPI settings… Ah well. It is free software afterall. I could fix it myself. Or I could whine and be lazy. We’ll see which one wins out in the end.
Building An Air Conditioner
April 1st, 2007 by dlove
This is a project kimberly and I actually worked on back in July of 2005, but considering the only thing we’ve posted about it has been on her MySpace blog, it’s a little hard to give the link love.
Our original inspiration was Geoff Milburn, but we had to come up with a few of our own fungineered solutions for the closed water system.

An Anniversary and a Question
April 1st, 2007 by dlove
I was greeted with this lovely message today:
Akismet has caught 10,005 spam for you since you first installed it.
Not a huge amount of spam, but it still crossed a round number so I felt like mentioning it.
On a more important note, Cezar has been running into 404 problems with the edgy repository. Have any other readers out there experienced the same thing (with any of the distributions)? If so, it would help greatly if you could:
Tell me the url of the file that is returning the 404 (e.g.
http://www.nighton.net/edgy/pool/m/mugshot_1.1.37-1ubuntu1_i386.deb).
Try downloading the file manually with either a web browser or wget.
If that works, it is likely a problem with the repository configuration in whichever apt client you are using (be sure to double check the sources.list!). Whether that works or not, let me know and we’ll see if we can get you up and running.

May 2nd, 2007 at 9:43 amHenriksen’s got 1.1.42 packages up. Also, any thoughts/plans on getting big board ( http://developer.mugshot.org/wiki/Big_Board ) into the repository?
Thanks for all the hard work.

May 4th, 2007 at 1:28 pmSorry I haven’t gotten around to updating packages yet. I’m running feisty on my machines now (did a reinstall instead of an upgrade - namely because it doesn’t seem like I need a 32-bit chroot for anything yet). So I’m learning to use pbuilder. I’ve been planning on sitting down and modifying the script to do multiple release / multiple arch’s all at once.
On top of that, both kimberly and I have been up to something completely unrelated… Hopefully something we can share with everyone soon.
As far as Big Board goes…
…
I’m not sure I really want to insert myself into the Big Board / Gimmie arguments. Neither seems to be (and I’m sure the authors have no problem admitting this) a true panel replacement yet. But after I get the pbuilder stuff working, I might end up changing my mind. If anyone else has interest in putting Big Board into the repository, let me know. Convince me.

May 4th, 2007 at 5:31 pmCool. No rush, just wanted to mention it.
If you get pbuilder working, I hope you will post instructions like you did for setting up a signed repository. I may need to set something like that up at school soon…
RE: Big Board vs. Gimmie, at least Gimmie is in the repository so we can try it! Big Board is currently unavailable to Ubuntu users that prefer binary packages. Big Board is also less of a panel replacement than Gimmie is, so there’s less cost (in terms of reconfiguring the desktop) in using it.
Of course, packaging anything up takes a significant amount of work, and it’s not all that interesting. Still, it would be cool to be able to try big board out and have dpkg around to purge it when done.

May 19th, 2007 at 1:31 pmThanks for your efforts on this. I got it installed and apparently working OK but i had some trouble with doing this “securely” as per http://developer.mugshot.org/wiki/Downloads
Added to “/etc/apt/sources.list”:
Mugshot repos start
deb http://www.nighton.net/ feisty main
deb-src http://www.nighton.net/ feisty main
Mugshot repos end
“sudo apt-get update” reported errors, principally this one:
Reading package lists…
W: GPG error: http://www.nighton.net feisty Release: The following signatures couldn’t be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY BB71D6FC2AF96BF6
Of course, that broke the conditional “&& sudo apt-get install mugshot” instructed at developer.mugshot.org and running install manually returned this warning:
WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated!
mugshot
In any case, thanks again!

May 21st, 2007 at 10:49 amYou have to make sure http://www.nighton.net/nighton_key.asc is added to your keyring.
In Synaptic:
Settings -> Repositories -> Authentication
Then click on Import Key File. Choose nighton_key.asc from wherever you saved it on your hard drive. That should make the errors go away. Hopefully I’ll get some time this weekend to package up the new version (haven’t forgotten, just been very busy).

May 21st, 2007 at 10:52 amAs a related side note, I need to get my rear down to one of the Chicago LoCo meetings so I can get that put in a public repository and signed by some people. It’s on the “todo list.”
