Mugshot 1.1.46
September 4th, 2007 by dlove
Sorry for the delay in the release. I’ve been quite busy lately and this one required a bit of tweaking (not much - just a small patch to account for differences in Ubuntu’s loudmouth package - details are available in the changelog). Behold the tree of woe…
-> dists
-> dapper
* 1.1.40 (src amd64 i386)
-> edgy
* 1.1.46 (src amd64 i386)
-> feisty
* 1.1.45 (src powerpc)
* 1.1.46 (src amd64 i386)
UPDATE:
Powerpc is now in as well:
-> dists
-> dapper
* 1.1.40 (src amd64 i386)
-> edgy
* 1.1.46 (src amd64 i386)
-> feisty
* 1.1.46 (src amd64 i386 powerpc)

Mugshot 1.1.45
June 24th, 2007 by dlove
No, I haven’t forgotten about writing that pbuilder guide (I just haven’t had time for it). However, here’s the new mugshot version:
-> dists
-> dapper
* 1.1.40 (src amd64 i386)
-> edgy
* 1.1.45 (src amd64 i386)
-> feisty
* 1.1.42 (src powerpc)
* 1.1.45 (src amd64 i386)
As always, other builds are greatly appreciated.
Mugshot 1.1.42
May 30th, 2007 by dlove
After much waiting (on the part of you, dear reader), Mugshot 1.1.42 is available in the repositories for both edgy and feisty (amd64, i386). Unfortunately, dapper did not want to play nice (the dbus version is just too old - not sure what can be done…). This also means that I do have a pbuilder setup that builds for dapper, edgy, and feisty (amd64, i386). It’s pretty slick now that I’ve figured out how to do it, so expect a pbuilder guide soon.
I haven’t looked at the possibilities of cross-compiling yet, so eventually I may end up spitting out ppc packages as well. Until then, PowerPC builds are always welcome. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to look at Big Board soon, and possibly start providing packages of it as well.
Without further ado, the beloved tree chart:
-> dists
-> dapper
* 1.1.40 (src amd64 i386)
-> edgy
* 1.1.42 (src amd64 i386)
-> feisty
* 1.1.42 (src amd64 i386)
Make sure to check out the new “Filter” feature - if you ever get annoyed at watching your stuff pop-up (I don’t really, but I can see how it could be bothersome), worry no more!
UPDATE:
Thanks to Keywan, ppc packages are now available in the repositories. The updated tree chart “goes like this” (yes, that was an oblique Invader Zim reference
):
-> dists
-> dapper
* 1.1.40 (src amd64 i386)
-> edgy
* 1.1.42 (src amd64 i386)
-> feisty
* 1.1.42 (src amd64 i386 powerpc)
Jesus in the clouds…
April 26th, 2007 by kimberly
Sadly, I missed the YouTube video of Jesus in the clouds over Mt. Sinai (or rather, what some random people were claiming to be Mt. Sinai). Personally, I prefer the Flying Spaghetti Monster theory. Hey… it could be a mound of pasta flanked on either side by really large meatballs. Jesus Appears on Google Maps
Then again. Maybe the world really is coming to an end. I decided to browse through the other news stories on the Metro.co.uk website and came up with the following:
1) A 54 year old man was arrested in Florida. Not really noteworthy except that he was dressed up as Captain America and trying to get women to feel up a burrito that he had stuffed down his pants… ‘Captain America’ arrested over pants-burrito
2) I must admit that I am addicted to McDonald’s Happy Meals because I like the toys. I’ve recently been collecting the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ones. Unfortunately for a little girl in New Zealand, she did not get the toy she was expecting. McDonalds was out of the regular toy, so she got a sports bag… that contained a condom. Happy Meal
3) Apparently Japanese people really don’t know what poodles look like - to the point where several thousand bought sheep that were being falsely sold as groomed poodles. Dog owners ‘fleeced’ in poodle scam
4) And finally, diners at a London pizza place promptly lost their appetites after a man ran into the restaurant and castrated himself. Go figure. Man cut off penis in restaurant

Happy Birthday To Me
April 17th, 2007 by dlove
Happy birthday to me. I’m officially 25 (well, give it two hours) - which in the US means I’ve finally crossed two barriers:
No more hassle in renting a car.
My parents’ income doesn’t matter on my FAFSA.
The latter doesn’t much matter considering grad student status does the same thing. So it’s only number 1 I’m really celebrating. It looks like my mid-life crisis (a.k.a. age 40) is the next big milestone to look forward to.
On a mugshot sidenote, I’ve been playing around with getting all of the nifty new application information working. It’s very hackish so far (which is why I haven’t inflicted it on anyone yet), but I’m managing to make some progress. If anyone can give me pointers on good ways to hook into the nifty package install progress bar that update-manager and synaptic use, I’d be grateful. Otherwise, I’ll try to come up with something. For some reason, it only appears to work in firefox. I’m guessing this has something (possibly) to do with the canvas widget and how epiphany is built. I’m not going to worry overly much about it at this point - I’m planning on upgrading to Feisty when it is officially released (looks like it missed by birthday by two days!).
Also, I’m considering deprecating the dapper packages. While it is still a supported release, I haven’t received any new builds for a while. On the other hand, I could always learn how to use pbuilder / buy myself some new hard drives. I haven’t really come to a conclusion yet. Anyone who’s reading, feel free to list your release / architecture combination in the comments so I can get a feel of what all is out there.
If you feel like celebrating with me, go to the nearest Irish (or approximately Irish) pub and drink a shot of irish whiskey for me. No, I’m not Irish (I think), but it seems to be the celebratory thing to do around these parts.
Comedy Central is better than Fox
April 16th, 2007 by kimberly
Wow, Fox should really be sad. Their viewers are less informed than those of a network whose main goal is to provide comedy.
Pew judged the levels of knowledgeability (correct answers) among those surveyed and found that those who scored the highest were regular watchers of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and Colbert Report.
They tied with regular readers of major newspapers in the top spot — with 54% of them getting 2 out of 3 questions correct. Watchers of the Lehrer News Hour on PBS followed just behind.
Virtually bringing up the rear were regular watchers of Fox News. Only 1 in 3 could answer 2 out of 3 questions correctly. Fox topped only network morning show viewers.
(Pew Survey Finds Most Knowledgeable Americans Watch ‘Daily Show’ and ‘Colbert’– and Visit Newspaper Sites)
The Daily Show and Colbert Report rock. Although, I do have to admit that I like the Colbert Report better. Gotta love “The Word” segment.
Plus, he had the guts to stand before the George W. and other republican party members and make jokes about Dick Cheney shooting a guy in the face.

October 11th, 2007 at 2:24 pmHey, thanks for keeping everything up to date.
Any chance you’ll get around to adding a gutsy section to your repository?
Also, I’ve been wondering if it’s worth using launchpad PPA (http://www.ubuntu.com/news/launchpad-personal-package-archive) vs. setting up my own repository. Got any opinions?

October 12th, 2007 at 1:36 pmI’m planning on building gutsy packages once it’s officially out. At that point I’ll most likely discontinue the older releases as well.
The launchpad PPA does look like an interesting option. Since I haven’t tried it out myself, I can’t really comment on it. With that said, my feeling is that it does look easier than managing all of the overhead of build environments + hosting a repository. I might even switch over to using that once gutsy is released.
The short of it is that I haven’t had a lot of time to focus on such things lately. I’ve been trying to finally defend my master’s thesis so that’s been my number one priority as of late. If you do get a chance to play with a PPA please let me know how it goes.

October 13th, 2007 at 2:09 pmCool. Sounds good. I should be writing my these instead of messing around with Ubuntu… but it’s so much more fun
