Remember the Kurds? Anyone?

October 18th, 2006 by kimberly

Okay, so we all should know that no weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq (except perhaps the viewers of Fox News). However, this doesn’t mean that removing Saddam from power was a bad thing… It just should have happened over a decade ago. But, hey, I’m sure genocide is way less important than imaginary weapons.

Anyway, today, Kurdish survivors of the genocide that occurred from 1987-1988 during Operation Anfal in Iraq gave their testimony. The Washington Post reports:

“A Kurdish witness at Saddam Hussein’s genocide trial testified Wednesday that he survived a massacre by running and falling into a ditch full of bodies as troops fired on his group of detainees.”

“A second Kurd told of a separate massacre in which 35 detainees, knowing they were about to die, decided to attack their guards in the hope that if they struck first, at least one would live to tell the tale.”

Too bad it took an entirely unrelated incident to hold the men who were responsible for the instigation of these attrocities accountable for their actions.

It also saddens me that I found this article on a French website (Lemonde.fr). It’s on the bottom of their homepage. I had to use a search engine to find it on CNN, the Washington Post, and the New York Times sites because it wasn’t linked to their main webpages or their world news pages. At least the Washington Post had it in its “Wires” section.
